Friday, March 4

Film Friday at St-Mary-in-the-Castle.

A screening of Les Blank’s 1978 documentary Always for Pleasure about the culture and traditions of New Orleans, including the mardi gras, followed by live music.

Saturday, March 5

South by South East at The Carlisle.

The day-long mini music festival will see 10 up-and coming bands playing a range of styles competing to win a headline slot for Fat Tuesday itself.

Samedi Gras, venue to be confirmed.

Fat Tuesday moves into St Leonards for the first time with this family fun day. There will be music, costume and mask-making, Cajun cooking and a screening of The Princess and the Frog, a fairy tale set in jazz era New Orleans.

Sunday, March 6

Preservation Sunday, The Old Town.

In a bid to recreate the spirit of Preservation Hall, the iconic jazz venue in the New Orleans French Quarter there will be an outdoor concert by Hastings’ most venerable group The Jazz Caverners at the Chess Square on George Street. There will also be an umbrella parade before the fun moves to the Black Market for more live music and traditional Creole food.

Monday, March 7

Slim Monday at The Street.

A warm-up night featuring King Sized Slim.

Tuesday, March 8

Fat Tuesday, various venues.

Eight venues, 16 bands and all manner of carnival chaos. Liane Carroll joins some of the best of last year’s acts The Cajun Dawgs, The Lucky Ones and Colonel Mustard. Blair will be involved again and talks are ongoing with some superb special guests. New venues like The Dolphin join The First In Last Out, The Dragon Bar and The Jenny Lind, with the afterparty at a venue in the town centre.
