Extra three flats to be built within former pub
The former Malvern pub
DEVELOPERS have been given the go-ahead to build three extra flats at a former pub.
The Malvern, in Malvern Way, on the Broomgrove estate, has not been used as a pub since 2005 and since been turned into eight units.
Residents on the estate have said the site has been a derelict eyesore and hive of anti-social behaviour for years.
Last August, councillors started the process for a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on the building, owned by Bankwell Estates Ltd, with a view to it being knocked down and new housing built by AmicusHorizon.
It was served a few weeks ago and owners have appealed against the move, meaning it will go before a planning inquiry at a later date.
Councillor Mike Turner said scores of residents have signed a petition against the latest proposals.
He said: “The existing accommodation is of a very basic and minimal standard. Far from being beneficial to the community it will add further to the long and protracted problems that people have had to endure.”
Mark Jones, speaking for Bankwell Estates Ltd, said: “There is an existing residential scheme there and the council approved conversion of the pub. The layout has been changed to provide three extra units so there is no harm to the amenity of residents by overlooking.”
Cllr Richard Street said: “Given the problems of homelessness in this town this proposal is to be commended.”
