Council approves demolition of bungalow amid concerns
A BUNGALOW will be demolished in St Helens to make way for two new ones despite fears from nearby residents about flooding, loss of light and overdevelopment of the site.
Robert Stokes, of Sedlescombe Road South, St Leonards, successfully applied to the council’s planning committee for permission to build two new bungalows at number 18 St Helens Down.
The committee received 10 letters of objection from residents worried about the impact of the site on the character of the area, overdevelopment on the site, drainage, loss of light and general noise.
At the meeting earlier this month, councillor Maureen Charlesworth said she was concerned about drainage.
There is a ditch in front of the site close to the road which regularly floods sending water onto the road.
She said: “I am concerned about the water run-off and how we keep it off the road. It seems to me this plan will make it worse.”
Development control manager Ray Crawford said: “The water will go into the water system and not into the road.”
All nine councillors unanimously approved the plan.
