A CALL has been made for no housing to be built on an area of land off The Ridge until after the Link Road is completed.

Councillor Carl Maynard, the county council’s lead member of transport and environment, made a statement at his recent decision-making meeting about Sandrock playing field. The borough council has identified the area in its local development plan for more than 80 houses.

Hastings Borough Council has to find space for 3,400 new homes to be built over the next 15 years. A public inquiry will be held later this year for the public to make any representations to a government planning inspector.

Cllr Maynard said no housing should be built until mitigating factors such as increased traffic have been taken into account.

He said: “Sites along or adjacent to The Ridge without existing planning permission should be deferred to the later stages of the local plan period to enable full consideration of the impacts on the local road network following completion of the Bexhill Hastings Link Road.”

Speaking after the meeting, Conquest ward cllr Peter Pragnell, said: “I’m delighted that cllr Maynard has shown the common sense that is called for along The Ridge. There must be no rush to cram houses onto a site so clearly unsuitable adding yet more traffic to an already congested road. I welcome his announcement.”

Council leader Jeremy Birch said: “I am quite happy with the development management framework.

“The population keeps on growing and we simply have to increase the number of houses.”
