Commissioner due to make first visit to St Leonards at ‘Skateathon’
THE POLICE and Crime Commissioner for Sussex was due to make her first appearance in St Leonards today (Friday)at the start of a 24-hour skateathon fundraising event.
Katy Bourne is expected to attend the start of the event at 6pm today.
It is being held inside the 4Down unit in Drury Lane on the Ponswood Industrial Estate and will run until 6pm tomorrow (Saturday).
The event aims to raise cash for the Boyley Trust Fund.
The trust was set up in memory of local rider, Richard ‘Boyley’ Ball, a well-loved and influential local BMX-er who died in a car accident in May 2002, aged just 24.
Richard, of Truman Drive, was killed when his moped crashed into two parked cars on Battle Road at midnight.
The BMX-mad student was in his final year of a business studies HND at the college.
Mrs Bourne will join Hastings district commander chief inspector Paul Phelps at the start of the event.
Chief inspector Phelps said: “This event is to support not only the skating and BMX community but also residents. Spring and summer are periods of the year when we receive complaints from residents about the volume of skateboarders and BMX riders at various locations in the town.
“The money raised is going to a good cause, phase two of the skate park in Falaise Road. This will give the skaters and BMX riders the opportunity to hone their skills in a safe environment.”
Local company 4Down Distribution has joined Hastings Police, Hastings Borough Council, Positive Futures, East Sussex County Council and Etnies offering all skateboarders and BMX riders exclusive use of their private bike/skate park to host the event.
There will be professional BMX and skateboarders in attendance to open the event with special appearances throughout the 24-hour period. There will be an opportunity to view the plans for the extension to the skate park and cast a vote for a preferred option. All proceeds from this event will go towards the construction of phase two of the park at the Falaise Road site.
The council has now secured £60,000 to complete the work and is now looking to appoint designers to the project.
The aim is to finish the work in time for the summer.
Project designs will be on show at Hastings Information Centre in the Town Hall during half term week and at the ‘24down’ event.
