A LIFEBOAT volunteer aims to raise the amount needed to keep a crew member operational for a year by running the Hastings Half-Marathon.

Colin Bewes, 51, a business analyst, has been a crewman at Hastings lifeboat station since 2008.

He already has three Hastings Half Marathons under his belt, and last year as part of a team effort raised £3,700 to buy life jackets.

He said: “I recently received a mailshot from the RNLI and it came with a leaflet listing some of the costs of keeping one crewman operational, so I thought that was as good a figure as any to start with.

“It ties in quite neatly with last year’s half marathon, since one of the runners in our 2012 team has now joined the crew and has nearly finished and passed his basic training.

The annual cost of keeping a crew member operational is £1,477.

This is made up of £1,255 for annual training, £172 for a helmet, £42 for boots, and £8 for gloves.

Last year Hastings Lifeboats launched a total of 64 times putting Hastings in the top 15 per cent of busiest stations in the RNLI’s 236-strong network.

The RNLI receives no Government funding, and relies on around 40,000 volunteers.

Hastings Half Marathon takes place this year on March 24.
