Church of Foyle’s War fame to get makeover

St Clements Church in Hastings Old Town is set to undergo a major refurbishment

THE church made famous in the hit television series Foyle’s War is set to undergo a major refurbishment following a generous funding donation.

St Clements in Swan Terrace in the Old Town will be given a complete overhaul in the coming months with the aim of making it even more accessible to tourists and visitors.

The building has been in need of refurbishment for several years and it has now applied to the Diocese of Chichester to carry out an extensive list of work.

This includes provision of a kitchen, a parish office, three meeting rooms as well as a new heated floor and redecoration.

The provision of a new floor for the bellringers will enable easier disabled access and the installation of a new state-of-the-art digital organ will be installed to replace the old pipe organ.

Total costs for the work are currently being put together.

In the TV series, the church (pictured right) was used as a regular backdrop for filming and Insepctor Foyle’s house was just round the corner.

Priest in Charge, Father Robert Featherstone said the works were in response to the vast numbers of visitors to the area and to make use of the opportunities for mission work in the community.

As well as featuring in the series Foyle’s War, the church is known as the place where English poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti got married 160 years ago.

The funding was received from a generous benefactor, but the Diocese of Chichester said it was unable to reveal who donated the money. Fr Robert said: “Even on a cold day in February when there’s a gale blowing in the Channel the church gets visitors coming in wanting to light a candle, say a prayer or just for someone to talk to. The church members are a good team and are just waiting for the green light to go ahead with the works.”
