Chance meeting at football game leads to 50 years of marital bliss

A COUPLE who first met while on the way to watch Hastings United play against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup are celebrating 50 years of happy marriage together.

Deborah and Gordon Foreman, of Old Roar Road, St Leonards, were both born and raised in Hastings and held a party at the Cooden Beach Hotel to mark their Golden Wedding anniversary.

Their relationship blossomed when they met again by chance at a local cricket match, due to their shared love of sport, Deborah’s father Kenneth being a cricketing umpire for many years.

Deborah, 75, and Gordon, now 76, were engaged in 1960 and married at Robertson Street congregational church on September 29 1962. Afterwards they honeymooned in Southsea.

Gordon joined the police in 1960, following in the footsteps of his father Reginald, and served until 1986.

During his long service he received three commendations from the Chief Constable.

In 1966 the couple’s son Nigel was born, and in 1967 they bought their first home.

Just two-and-a-half years later Sarah came along to complete the family.

They moved to their present address in 1979.

Both Deborah and Gordon love sport, gardening and generally enjoying nature.

Sadly the couple lost their son Nigel in June 1990 aged just 24 to cancer, but with the help of their daughter and many good friends and family they slowly came to terms with their loss.

The couple would like to say a big thank you to all their friends and family for their cards, flowers, presents and good wishes.

Deborah said: “It was so lovely so see so many people at the party, some of whom we hadn’t seen in years. It was such a treat.”
