Celebrating 100 years of Macmillan Cancer Support
MORE than £100,000 was raised by the people of Hastings and St Leonards for Macmillan Cancer Support, in its centenary year.
In 2011 the charity celebrated 100 years of supporting people affected by cancer, and raised more than £1.49 million across Sussex.
The long-standing Hastings and St Leonards Macmillan Committee held many events throughout the year including open gardens and quizzes.
The Sussex Macmillan Centenary Group, which is based in Hastings, organised a variety of events, including an Elton John tribute night and a treasure hunt. Between these two groups alone, more than £80,000 was raised for Macmillan in 2011.
Other events that added to the fundraising total included the annual Beatles Day event held at the White Rock Theatre, and the Hastings Half Marathon, which saw 100 Macmillan runners enter.
Those interested in joining team Macmillan this year, once they have secured a place from the race organisers, can sign up at www.macmillan.org.uk/running.
Sussex fundraising manager Harriet Fairbrother said: “We can’t thank the people of Hastings enough for their continued fantastic support!
“I particularly want to thank our fantastic army of volunteers who show such dedication and hard work in all they do for Macmillan. Without them and everyone who supports Macmillan we could not continue to provide the fantastic support to those 40,000 people living with cancer across Sussex.”
