Camp for Climate Action
Eight members of Hastings' newly-formed climate change campaign, Rising Tide Hastings, have returned from the Camp for Climate Action outside Heathrow airport.
The estimated 1500 campers took part in workshops, practical sessions and action training aimed at taking action against the British Airports Authority (BAA) on Sunday.
Cyclist Patrick Nicholson was part of the Bicycology group at the camp, offering free bicycle maintenance as well as pedal-powered cinema, and other Hastings campers were part of the legal observer team, supporting those taking part in peaceful direct action as well as observing interactions between police and activists.
Hastings residents also organised a tour of various London sites connected with climate change, including Boeing, BP and the Department for Transport (see attached picture).
Andrea Needham, who attended the camp with her three year old daughter, said, "Climate change is the most pressing issue we will ever face. The Government's Climate Bill does not go far enough: we need immediate action from governments to vastly reduce carbon emissions immediately, otherwise there may be no future for human life on our planet. As individuals we need also to do everything we can to minimise our own carbon emissions, and pledging not to fly is a huge part of that."
