Cabinet says no to council meeting webcasts
Lovers of local politics will have to wait for council meeting broadcasts, after Hastings Borough Council cabinet voted against webcasts.
The upcoming budget was blamed for holding back on the 20,000 a-year plan to video meetings and post them online.
Twisting the saying about justice, Cllr Godfrey Daniel (Lab. Braybrooke), who put forward the motion, said: "Democracy has to be done, and seen to be done."
"The web is the future, not the past," he said.
"People are using the web for all sorts of things. I get more emails now than letters.
"I said there would be a cost involved, but at the end of the day what cost is democracy?"
Discussing the upcoming budget, Cllr Matthew Lock (Con. St Helens) said: "I don't think this is the right time to do it.
"I'd rather that the 20,000 was going to areas of need."
The cabinet voted five to four against the motion to webcast meetings, but voted in favour of moving council meetings to another location as and when the need requires.
