Beware bogus kitchenware salesman

POLICE are appealing for information from residents who may have been approached by kitchenware sellers following a distraction theft.

A bogus kitchenware salesman visited a home in Terrace Road, St Leonards, on Wednesday, March 13, between 2pm and 3pm, and was invited inside for a few minutes.

Later that evening the victim, a man in his mid 40s, discovered that a laptop had been stolen from the property.

The fraudster is described as white, 20 to 25-years-old, of skinny build, clean shaven and with boney features. He was wearing a white baseball cap with the peak to the front, a black tracksuit top and was carrying a bag.

Police say he may be working with another man.

Detective Constable Nikki Westgate, of East Sussex Priority Crime Team, said: “It appears that the victim in this case has been distracted by the man claiming to be selling kitchenware while someone else came into the property and stole the laptop.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw two men acting suspiciously around the time of this incident or were themselves approached by a man or men offering to sell kitchenware.

“We would remind anyone who receives a caller at their door to be vigilant and not to invite them inside.”

Anyone with information which may assist police with their enquiries is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 812 of 14/3 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
