STUDENT Ben Elphick sacrificed body hair along with a little dignity to raise funds in the memory of the beloved grandad he lost to cancer.

Brian Wyatt died in November but 21-year-old Ben went ahead with his pledge to have a full body wax in aid of the Judy Beard day unit where Brian received treatment and care.

The event was held at Quakersmill in Bexhill and achieved a ‘fantastic’ £1,770.

Hair removal challenges are not new to the family according to mum Alison who said it goes back to when she had breast cancer 10 years ago. Brian had his head shaved in solidarity with his daughter to raise funds for Macmillan care.

In August last year when Brian was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bowel cancer Ben, of Wentworth Close, Bexhill, volunteered for a full body wax in aid of the unit where Brian would have chemotherapy. They set a date for December 15 and hoped to raise around £500 but unfortunately Brian lost that battle with the disease in November.

Ben decided to go ahead with the fundraiser anyway and, cheered on by loved ones and friends, the body wax went ahead. Two pots of wax and two hours later, it was completed, with mates chipping in so they could tear off some strips themselves.

Alison said: “Special mention must go to Adrian Lusted and Emily Crowther at Quakersmill for hosting the event for free, for organising the raffle, and an unexpected added donation, as without them it wouldn’t have been possible. A fantastic £1,770 was raised and Ben presented the cheque to the Judy Beard Unit on January 22.

“The money will go directly to the ward and will be spent on equipment that can help the patients directly. Ben would like to say a big thank you to all those who donated and supported the family during the difficult time.”
