Bay residents voice fears on wind turbine

PEVENSEY Bay residents have objected to an Environment Agency plan to install a wind turbine on its Coast Road site.

A planning application for a 29ft high grey pole with 18ft black blades was lodged with Wealden District Council in April.

The Environment Agency wants the turbine to provide renewable energy for some of the offices on the site because it is concerned about its carbon footprint and has been actively making efforts to reduce its dependence on grid energy and the associated CO2 emissions.

However, Pevensey Parish Council and residents in the area have objected to the plan.

In a letter, Pevensey Bay residents Mr and Mrs Short said, "It will cause unnecessary noise pollution and will be unsightly.

"We understand the need to be more environmentally friendly but this is primarily a residential area and this wind turbine will not benefit the surrounding area."

Another Pevensey Bay resident, Maureen Richards, said she had heard smaller wind turbines than the one planned had caused noise and neighbours found them to be intrusive.

And Chris and Jill Cowley-Freeman, of Cobald Road in Pevensey Bay, said, "Many find these turbines unattractive and they have generated some bad press, which we feel will blight our property value."

A spokesperson from the Environment Agency said, "We are committed to reducing our energy consumption and the organisation's carbon footprint.

"Every watt of electricity we use comes from renewable energy sources.

"The wind turbines we chose to use are designed to give minimal noise which is virtually unnoticeable compared with background noise in the area.

"Pevensey depot is a busy, working site where lots of staff, vehicles and equipment is based.

"We have proposed the turbine be sited in an area of the depot where it can be seen from only one adjacent property.

"We do not think the new turbines will make the working depot unsightly."

The application is recommended for approval and will be considered by Wealden District Council planners on June 25.
