Battle's farmers' market could be the last
Last Saturday's Battle Farmers' market could have been the last ever.
It was announced last week that the market is to close after nearly a decade.
The event, which takes place on the Abbey Green on the third Saturday of each month, is popular with shoppers but is failing at to attract enough stall holders.
Kevin Dixon, of Battle Chamber of Commerce, said: "The reason is the disappointing attendance of stall holders.
"For a while there have been just seven stall holders turning up - five produce and two crafts - and we need at least 12 to make it viable cost-wise. At one time there were not enough stalls available for people who wanted them.
"We have discussed this at the Chamber and its looks as though this coming one will be the last.
"It is not only the loss of income, there are two markets a week at Market Square and the nearby Brede Farmer's Market, which is weekly, is very popular. That is held indoors, which is much more economical and stall holders are enthusiastic about it.
"If 12 stall holders do show an interest in Battle then the Chamber of Commerce will review the decision.
"The market has been going for nine and a half years and in many ways has fulfilled its purpose. There are now lost of outlets for organically produced food in the High Street when there weren't originally.
"The market is a tribute to the hard work of the Chamber of Commerce chairman Colin Smith over the past nine and a half years.
Battle councillor Paula Fisher said: "It is disappointing because people do love the market and come to Battle for it.
"I remember there being 25 stalls in the early days."
