Artist’s design to give facelift to roundabout
PELHAM roundabout could be home to a fresh new piece of artwork by the Summer as the designs of two artists have been shortlisted.
The designs are being kept under wraps for now, but will go on display to the public from March 8 to 10 in the town centre and The Stade, and feedback from the public is invited.
Following this the judges will take into account people’s opinions and preferences in making their final decision, due to be announced next month.
Fairlight Arts Trust, established by David and Sarah Kowitz to promote the arts in Hastings, is investing £120,000 towards the artwork at the roundabout in Breeds Place.
Seven artists were asked to submit ideas, and the shortlisted two are Saint Clair Cemin and Henry Krokatsis, both internationally known.
Cemin is a Brazilian born sculptor and painter, who lives and works in New York City, while Krakatsis is a London-based artist whose work transforms the perception of everyday objects and materials.
The judging panel includes ex-Hastings MP Michael Foster, internationally renowned artists Michael Craig-Martin and Gavin Turk, Toby Clarke, director of London’s Vigo Gallery, and David Kowitz.
When borough councillors gave the project their blessing in September last year, councillor Peter Chowney said: “We will have an iconic artwork in a prominent location, putting Hastings on the map for public art.” Outline planning permission has been granted by Hastings Borough Council for the artwork, though when the design has been selected, the chosen artist will develop a detailed plan.
