A GROUP of apprentices proved they were a class act after achieving top awards at Sussex Coast College this week.

The college hosted the 2012 Apprentice Awards event at its Station Plaza campus on Monday when 60 local employers, dignitaries and families of the winning apprentices attended. Mayor Kim Forward presented trophies and certificates to the winners and runners-up and also to employers, in recognition of their contribution to supporting apprentices.

One of the winners was Kerry Bunce who took a top award for her painting and decorating skills, traditionally a male-dominated trade, earning her special praise from her boss.

The winners and runners-up were:

l Kerry Bunce – Winner: Outstanding Achievement Apprentice (L2 Painting and Decorating), who works for St Leonards-based property maintenance company George Stone.

l Arron Polton – Winner: Advanced Apprentice (L3 Business and Administration), who works for the marketing and communications team at Sussex Coast College.

l Irene Giff – Runner-up: Advanced Apprentice (Business and Administration), who works at the Conquest Hospital.

l Natalie Barnes – Winner: Intermediate Apprentice (L2 Legal Secretary in Business Administration), who works for Capital Legal Services, in St Leonards.

l April Grant – Runner-up Intermediate Apprentice (L2 Business and Administration), who works for the student engagement team at Sussex Coast College.

Kerry’s manager, Brian Dazwell, said: “Construction is still a very male-dominated industry, but Kerry fits in well and is respected by her team-mates. She has gained knowledge through her apprenticeship and her skills are very good.”

Kerry said: “I always try to achieve the tasks that are asked of me with confidence and ability.

“The good things about being an apprentice are working on site, gaining knowledge and experience and improving my skills.” To find out more about the college’s apprenticeships, ring Hayley Robertson on 01424 458317 or hrobertson@sussexcoast.ac.uk.
