And the new secret weapon to beat hospital superbug is garlic
A Hastings and Rye company is at the forefront of the batttle against the hospital superbug MRSA.
As the furore over hospital infection rages two local men are on a mission to wipe out the bug by using natural extracts from the humble garlic.
Peter Josling, from Hastings and his colleague Norman Bennett, from Rye, say they have already cured more than 50 people in the south east of the killer condition. They are backed by Dr Ron Cutler, a lecturer in microbiology from the University of East London, who tests their claims.
And Allicin International - which trades in 14 countries - is on the verge of publishing detailed case histories in a top medical journal explaining just how its product has worked.
Their herbal remedy uses allicin extract - which is what garlic produces when it is itself 'attacked' - extracted from the plant by water.
Mr Josling, 50, said: "We have treated more than 50 people in this region who have been sent home from hospital with what has been described as untreatable MRSA.
"Their allicin courses have taken weeks and in some cases months to clear up, but they have been deemed completely free of the bug afterwards."
Dr Cutler examines the garlic patients' swabs to test for the superbug and pronounces them clear once the remedy has done its work.
Mr Josling added: "We are not allowed to make any kind of medical claim and we also have to make it clear that our herbal remedy does not have any ethical approval. Despite this, the results speak for themselves."
The pair have lectured doctors in Canada, Scandinavia, and the USA about the benefits of garlic. The patients treated came from the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and the Royal Sussex in Tonbridge, but not from the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.
