Alcohol thief ‘didn’t realise’ his crime until the next day

A SHOPLIFTER walked into a supermarket and stole cans of beer - but did not realise he had done it until the next day.

Anthony Vause, 49, of Godwin Road, took the four cans of Special Brew from Sainsbury’s in Station Plaza on January 16.

At a court hearing on Monday, Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said Vause was arrested some time later by police at his home.

“He told officers he was an alcoholic and needed a drink but had no money to pay for it,” Mr Kateley added.

Vause pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared in the dock on Monday.

Samantha Wingfield, defending, said: “He tells me he does not have an alcohol problem.

“On this occasion his mum, who lives in West Yorkshire, had a stroke and he did not have enough money to go up and see her.

“He had a drink and it affected his judgement so he did not realise until the following day that he had taken the alcohol.

“He has not drunk for a considerable period.

“He did have a problem but that has now all been resolved.

“The defendant says this was a one-off and expressed remorse in interview with police.”

Magistrates fined Vause £50 and ordered him to pay £7.75 compensation and £45 court costs.
