WE woke up last Tuesday morning to the smell of gas, which apparently came from France, and no doubt some ill-informed wag will say ‘that’s another stink from Europe’.

However, it turns out that the gas was Mercaptan, which is added to natural gas to give it an odour for our safety. Another timely reminder that our safety and well-being lies in Europe.
