Footballers don’t follow same rules

HASTINGS Borough Council (HBC) recognises that protection and enhancement of the environment is essential to sustaining a high quality of life in Hastings and St Leonards.

The above is the start of HBC’s environmental policy.

I regularly walk a dog at Tile Kiln and find after football matches at weekends there is an abundance of litter, bottles, cans orange peel, insulating tape etc. clearly left by football teams.

This is not only unsightly, but a real danger to the environment and particularly wildlife.

Is it not about time that the council wrote to all football team secretaries to advise them that they have a duty and responsibility to clear up after they have completed their match.

When I ran teams, we had a black sack to collect all the rubbish and took it away with us, surely this can easily be carried out by current teams.

The introduction of a fine to those teams leaving the rubbish, and the council knows who they are because it issues the permits to play each week, would soon have an effect.

The council should make an effort to write to them.

Council taxpayers have to foot the bill for clearing this up when it is the responsibility of the teams that use the facilities.

Members of the public face fines for dropping litter in public places, as do dog walkers for not clearing up after their dogs.

Why is this being ignored?
