THIS year’s Hastings Beer and Music Festival kicks off proper tonight (Friday) with home-grown chart-toppers Keane launching the two-day event.

The Battle-based band are returning to Hastings to play a one-off gig for local fans in Alexandra Park, having just returned from a US tour.

They will be supported by local bands Spin and Virgin Soldiers.

Gates open at 6pm this evening and will be open until 11.30pm with live music until 11pm.

Last night the Battle of Hastings Proms took place in Alexandra Park, run in conjunction with Hastings Beer and Music Festival.

Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) sees the return of the Saturday Showcase and Family Fun Day, an afternoon of local unsigned talent, which runs from noon to 5pm.

With their special blend of emergency and boisterous beats, Ska’d For Life are set to close this year’s event and will be supported in the evening, by Not Guilty, Cushty and Dorey The Wise.

The festival, which raises money for local good causes and organised and run by Hastings Round Table, will play host to the cream of local music talent, as well as housing a wide selection of more than 100 real ales, all from Europe’s longest bar.

To cope with the huge demand expected at the bar this year, organisers have also added an additional lager tent which they expect will reduce queuing significantly.

Phil Astell, festival chairman, said: “This year’s event is set to be absolutely fantastic. With Friday night sold old out weeks ago, we are also expecting record numbers attending tomorrow (Saturday) night.

“The committee has worked incredibly hard all year to pull this event together and I’d like to express my thanks to members and the army of volunteers who work tirelessly during the festival and make the whole event possible.”

With 5,000 people set to attend tonight’s sold out event, festival organisers are asking fans not to turn up if they do not already have a ticket.

Saturday Night tickets are still available for £10 in advance from the Hastings Information Centre at the town hall. Otherwise they are £12 on the door although entrance without an advance purchased ticket cannot be guaranteed.
