HUNDREDS of residents turned out on Sunday to take part in a mass rally to oppose any downgrading of The Ridge fire station.

The supporters marched from the fire station to Ore Community Centre supported by the Sambalanco Drum group and another drum group.

At the centre a series of speeches were given from organisers including county councillor Phil Scott, Fire Brigade Union branch secretary Mark Brown, Ore councillor Michael Wincott and prospective parliamentary candidate Sarah Owen.

Two senior officers from the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service also attended to put across their perspective on the proposals.

An organising group is expected to meet this week to discuss further community meetings and events in the run up to the final decision on the station’s future on December 13.

Cllr Scott said: “It was a fantastic turnout and the centre was packed to the rafters.

“I held a vote at one point in the rally to ask who was for and against the proposals. Everyone put their hands up when I asked who was against.”
