How to get bees in your garden

GARDENERS who are keen to attract more bees and butterflies to their patches should head to a garden centre offering free advice on pollinating insects.

Hastings Garden Centre, on Bexhill Road, St Leonards, is hosting a Bee and Butterfly Festival from Saturday, July 16 until Sunday, July 31 to promote how important the insects are in maintaining a healthy environment.

Mark Smith, manager of the centre, said: “Bees and butterflies are very important to gardeners because they feed on flower nectar and, as they feed, they transfer pollen on their bodies and legs from one plant to another.

“Without bees many arable and horticultural crops couldn’t produce a harvest, which would seriously affect our food supply.

During the festival, staff at the garden centre will be handing out activity sheets for youngsters and offering free advice.
