Chief says Conquest has made substantial progress

THE man in charge of running the Conquest says a new report due out next month will show the hospital has made “substantial progress” following the damning verdict from inspectors last year.

East Sussex NHS Trust Chief Executive Darren Grayson said: “We still have a way to go”.

Last year the Care Quality Commission (CQC) slammed patient care across the board following a routine inspection in February 2011.

During their visit to the Conquest, they discovered that not all junior doctors had been properly trained and care and treatment decisions in A&E were imposed on patients, rather than explained and consent sought.

One frail elderly patient in A&E who had a fractured hip, was left on a trolley for more than seven hours, and another put in a ward with nothing to eat all day and although a drink had been left, it was out of reach.

The report also revealed “significant shortages of staffing” across the hospital.

CQC inspectors returned to the Conquest for a follow up inspection in September, with a new report due to be made public next month.

Speaking at a Trust Board meeting in Battle recently, Mr Grayson said: “I think this will show we have made substantial progress, but I think we still have a way to go.”

He added: “We are on a journey. There are no quick fixes.”
