Members from Hastings Ore WI entered a variety of classes in the hotly-contested Women’s Institute section of the recent South of England Show at Ardingly, and the haul of prizes put the group in overall second place among all the WI’s from West and East Sussex.

Stephanie Gaunt won first prize in the creative writing class, for a humorous piece on the invention of the Barbie doll, and local artist and WI member Clare Walters won second prize for her floral pen and ink drawing.

A joint entry for a knitted mermaid’s pool won third prize, and particular congratulations went to Carol Isden who knitted the mermaid! Another joint entry, a scene celebrating the achievements of Emmeline Pankhurst, also won third prize, as did a cake baked to a wartime recipe by Jan Kelly.

Some of the winning entries will be exhibited at the East Sussex Federation of Women’s Institutes AGM at Eastbourne in 2016.
