Hastings Senior Men's Forum

On Tuesday, 24th February, we were treated to a Victorian Magic Lantern Show by Mr and Mrs John Burgess.

This began with a brief history of the Magic Lantern dating back to the time of Samuel Pepys, and was followed by a wonderful collection of slides dating back a far as 1820, and shown on a magic lantern of the 1890s.

These ranged from fascinating stills to clever 'moving' slides, the former painted on glass circles of a small size, but blown up to show amazing detail.

The 'moving' slides depicted circus acts, and caused much amusement.

They were followed by a series showing Hastings in the latter nineteenth century.

The second half of the programme had a series of The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and, by way of contrast, British warships of the first World War, some in action at the Battle of Jutland, followed by some comic slides of the 1860s, a drama contrast and some more comic slides to bring a most entertaining programme to an end.
