Although the Club is, generally speaking, still in its summer doldrums there has been some activity in recent weeks with a couple of friendly matches and a rapid play..
A match against the Greater London club (a successor of the old LCC//GLC clubs) was drawn 4½-4½. Adrian Cload, Gregory Chandler and Patrice Tournier all won, draws came from Bob Elliston, Ray Brooks and Jim Wheeler, but Mel Young, Marc Bryant and Umberto Jozwiak all lost.
Wanstead & Woodford were the next visitors and we were thrashed, 8½-2½. Indeed, only on-the-day captain Paul Kelly won; Howard Tebbs, Ray Brooks and Adrian Cload drew, with a long list of losers: Bob Elliston, Andrew Fleming, Daniel Lowe, Con Power, Peter Bedborough, Umberto Jozwiak, Roy Richardson.
Twenty players assembled on Bank Holiday Monday for seven rounds of rapid-play chess, a typical game lasting 20-30 minutes. Welsh international Francis Rayner took the honours with 5½ from 7, starting with four straight wins then coasting home. Patrick Donovan, John Sugden and Bob Elliston came next on 5, in that order of tie-break. Elliston also won a category prize, as did Batuhan Kaya (age 11) and Robert Smart.
