OUR speaker on November 30 was Hugh Miller, who took as the title of his programme “A brush with A R Quinton”.
This may have led many members to wonder just who this “Quinton” person was.
Mr Miller quickly introduced him as a watercolour painter of the late 19th and early 20th century who produced many hundreds of beautiful pictures of rural landscapes and village scenes of his time.
Many of them were reproduced as postcards, for in those days these were a popular method of communication.
He travelled mostly by bicycle, visiting places all over England, not least here in Sussex, with depictions of domestic life and farm work,
The talk was much appreciated by an audience made small by the cold weather, and led to a hearty vote of thanks from all.
