HASTINGS Ore WI meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in Christ Church Hall, Old London Road.
Our meetings this year have included: a celebration of the Suffragette Movement in Hastings with members dressing in costume and a display of photographs provided by local historian Brian Lawes, a talk and demonstration on Sussex Trug making along with a plant and seed sale, a felting demonstration with the opportunity to make a small brooch and an introduction to Zumba.
Over the coming months our meetings will include a cheese and wine tasting evening, medieval costume, spinning and weaving (with another opportunity to dress up!), a talk on the history of Ore, Christmas cake decorating and a talk on Christmas customs.
In addition to our main meetings we have craft groups that meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the evening and the third Thursday of the month during the day, a book club which meets on the second Thursday of the month and a walking group organised and led by a member of the local Ramblers Association.
We also organise theatre and cinema trips and outings to restaurants and country houses.
We like to participate in local events and have this year been involved in Fat Tuesday where we held a Cardi Gras Cake Sale in the Stade Hall and more recently we had a book stall at the Ore Community Fair.
Our own fundraising events this year will include a stall at the 1066 Market on The Stade on June 7 selling items made by our craft group members, a Summer Bazaar with a vintage and craft theme in All Saints Hall, All Saints Street on July 6 (if you are a local crafts person and would like a stall at this event please contact Jan on 01424 436182) and another stall, this time with a Pirate theme at the Stade Market on July 19 (the Friday before Hastings Pirate Day).
Money raised at these events will be shared between our WI, St Michael’s Hospice and Charity for Kids. Last year we raised more than £300 for Breast Cancer Care and £90 for the MS Society.
Our current membership stands at 47, with members’ ages ranging from 30 to much older, new members are always welcome.
