Hastings MP's visit to restored Marlborough House

The town's MP visited residents at a fully restored sheltered accommodation complex on Friday (March 17).

Amber Rudd joined people for an informal chat over a cup of tea and sausage rolls at Marlborough House in Warrior Square, St Leonards.

It was closed at the end of July 2013 after a fire ripped through the roof.

Scores of residents were displaced and had to be found emergency alternative accommodation.

The building suffered extensive water damage as more than 50 firefighters battled to contain the blaze and prevent it spreading to further properties.

Amber said: “I remember the devastating effects the 2013 fire had on residents and our community. I was delighted to visit the reopened accommodation and meet some of those who were affected. The renovations have been beautifully finished and create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

“Thank you to Tony and the team at Marlborough House for making me feel so welcome, and for showing me around one of the newly refurbished flats. I look forward to paying another visit later in the year once all 40 flats are occupied.”

Marlborough House reopened in January. So far, 17 of the original residents who were relocated have returned.

Tony Morgan, Hyde Group head of housing, said: “We are pleased Amber came to see our residents, who are now happily settling back into their homes.

“We also thank her for the support she provided in helping us to overcome some of the obstacles in getting these residents back where they belong.

“The future is bright for Marlborough House and we look forward to welcoming more new residents soon and working with them to help further build the wonderful community spirit at this scheme.”
