Hastings motorist and St Leonards passenger injured in East Guldeford road collision

Two men were injured in a road collision in East Guldeford, near Rye, yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, October 26).

Firefighters from Rye and Broad Oak were joined by the technical rescue units from Battle and Lewes to attend the scene at around 4.50pm.

The incident involved a German registered articulated lorry, travelling east towards the Channel ports, and a red Ford Transit van, travelling west.

Police said the van driver, a 50-year-old man from Hastings, and his passenger, a 40-year-old man from St Leonards, were released by fire and rescue crews.

Both men were taken by ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent.

The driver was subsequently transferred to King’s College Hospital, London.

A helicopter from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance attended and its doctors assisted with treatment of the casualties. Kent Police also assisted.

The lorry driver, who was transporting a cargo of kitchen goods, was unhurt.

Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance said the van driver had injuries to his head and legs.

The passenger in the van sustained injuries to his thorax, a spokesman added.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the road was closed in both directions for almost seven hours following the collision.

Traffic diversions were set up via Camber and Lydd.
