Hastings is an ‘art hotspot’ and the ‘Shoreditch of Sussex’, according to an international culture website.
The Culture Trip described the town as undergoing ‘shoreditchification’ and becoming increasingly trendy, overtaking Brighton in the hipster-stakes.
The article by Claire Baker cites the Saga headquarters, the Creative Media Centre and revamped University of Brighton campus as reasons for Hastings’ new-found coolness.
According to Ms Baker, the Jerwood Gallery has attracted new artists and exhibitions and as well as inspired the creation of smaller galleries like the Rebel Gallery.
“Hastings is a place for experimentation in a less competitive atmosphere than London (and more specifically the real Shoreditch), but remains a refreshing change from the buzz of London or the blinding colour of Brighton,” she said.
And she finishes with: “Where ‘shoreditchification’ implies adhering to a trend and aspiring to an established acceptable form, Hastings brings out the true art in everyone, with room to let it out and let it grow.”
