A Hastings councillor described as a ‘true friend and colleague’ has died today (Thursday, February 11).

Labour member John Hodges represented the Old Hastings ward on the borough council and the St Helens and Silverhill division on East Sussex County Council.

A statement from Hastings Borough Council said: “We are very sad to announce the death of Cllr John Hodges, chairman of the Foreshore Trust, cabinet member and ward councillor for Hastings Old Town.”

Leader Peter Chowney said: “We were very sad indeed to learn of the death of Councillor John Hodges earlier today, a true friend and colleague.

“This is the second time within a year that a senior councillor has passed and clearly we are greatly saddened.

“Our thoughts are with his family and many friends in the town and we would ask that the family’s privacy is respected.”

Cllr Hodges was born in Silverhill, as were his children and his mother before him.

His profile on the Hastings and Rye Labour website said: “A lifetime within a community provides that unique insight into its needs and aspirations that can never be within the gift of those who are alien to these very special attributes.

“I am proud to be part of your community.”
