Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club

Your local team overcame Horsham on Monday, February 16 in Sussex’s premier competition, the McArthur Cup.

The 4½-1½ scoreline looks clear-cut but it was only in the last hour of the 3½ hour session that the visitors’ resistance crumbled. Wins for us from Francis Rayner, Howard Tebbs, Ollie Willson and Bob Elliston, a draw from Bernard Cafferty, John Sugden went down.

There has been only one other recent result, a comfortable 4-0 win by our Kent League Division 6 team, who whipped Tunbridge Wells 4-0 and are now likely to qualify for the Kent semis. Wins from Adrian Cload, Paul Buswell, Anna Pontonutti and Harry Stephens.

It’s still very early days in the club tournaments. In the Championship John Sugden is clear leader with +4 with Bernard Cafferty his closest challenger on +2 and games in hand. In division 2 (the Pelton Cup) there are three players on +3: Adrian Cload, Keith Hossack and Robert Smart and in division 3 (the Rush Cup) Steve Oakman leads with +3, Alfred Mikurenda chases him on +2.

Congratulations to club member Gary Willson, who has landed the job of office manager at the English Chess Federation (whose national HQ is in Battle). He takes up his new post on March 2.
