The chessmen were dusted down, the boards given a wipe and the tables a polish as the club eased back into competitive mode with an outing in the top division of the Kent League.

The trip to Rainham produced a 3-3 draw, which skipper Ray Brooks viewed as: “Away from home and slightly outgraded... this result is a decent start.”

There were wins for Bob Elliston and John Sugden, draws from Howard Tebbs and Jim Wheeler, with Ollie Willson and Brooks himself going down.
