THE tradition of more than a century was maintained when the local club entertained the Insurance Chess Club. This annual fixture was first contested in 1902.
It is however a few years since our visitors have returned home with the savour of success, and that didn’t change last Saturday.
The home team ran out winners by 4½-3½, our score coming from wins from Nigel Harvey, Jim Wheeler and Keith Hossack, with draws from Rasa Norinkeviciute, Ray Brooks and Chris Hann; Bob Elliston and Daniel Lowe lost. It was good to see Harvey and Hann return to competition after lay offs of two and three years respectively.
As expected, our second team avoided relegation from Mid-Sussex division 1, a perennial feat: how long can they keep on doing it? This time round they simply needed to avoid a heavy defeat against Knoll Knights, a team from Hove; and sailed home 4-1 winners.
We were gifted one point when the visitors turned up a player short; Bernard Cafferty, Andrew Fleming and Paul Kelly all won, Ollie Willson lost. The seconds thus ended their season two places above the drop zone. Kudos to captain Gary Willson for keeping them up with good squad management.
Our Kent League team now know their opponents in the division 2 semi-final: they will entertain Petts Wood and Orpington on April 27.
