Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club

There were alas no memorable performances by club members in last weekend’s first of the subsidiary tournaments at the International Chess Congress at Horntye Park.

There was however some modest success with Jeremy Hudson (Bexhil)l and Mason Woodhams (Hastings) joint runners up in their section, and Paul Buswell (St Leonards) and George Jelliss (Hastings) equal third in theirs.

Conrado Quintos (St Leonards) won a category prize. Five other club members failed to make the prizewinners’ lists.

There was one memorable early result in the Masters, where young Ollie Willson beat John Sugden, a seasoned veteran of the club and its second strongest player; perhaps the wheel is now inexorably turning to the new generations.
