Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club

THERE were comfortable wins for two of the Club’s teams in early season home matches last week.

In Kent League Division 2 we ran out easy winners against Maidstone by 5-1, outgunning our opponents on all boards and only our number one, John Sugden, ever looked in any slight difficulty, and he came back to hold the draw.

Bob Elliston, Mel Young, Laurence Butt and Jim Wheeler all won with varying degrees of ease, and skipper Ray Brooks contributed a half point with a quiet draw. Special mention to Laurence Butt for a clever positional game and rendering his opponent helpless through zugzwang.

In Mid-Sussex League Division 4 our fourths were also easy winners against Worthing fourths, by 4½ points to a bare half. There were comfortable wins from Mason Woodhams and Jeremy Hudson; Keith Hossack worked diligently to overcome his opponent, and Greg Chandler controlled his tendency to play too quickly to deliver the win. Only Ken Lucas had to struggle somewhat before steering his game to a drawn ending.
