THE latest instalment of the long established (more than a century old) series of matches against the Insurance Chess Club was played out last weekend. Hastings ran out comfortable winners by 4½ games to 2½.
Sixteen-year-old Daniel Lowe got us off to a good start by notching up our first win, and Alan Barton also scored the full point. All five other games - Bob Elliston, Ray Brooks, Howard Tebbs, Ken Lucas and Eric Houghton - were drawn and we never looked in danger of losing.
In the Kent League Division 2 Paul Kelly’s team, already qualified, made sure of top place in their section with a 3-3 draw at Rainham. Mel Young won, Jim Wheeler lost, and there were draws from Paul Kelly, Bob Elliston, Ray Brooks and Daniel Gibbs. They now have a home semi-final v Beckenham & Bromley.
But our Division 6 team failed at the last to qualify. They needed not only to win but to win big against Snodland, but going for broke rebounded into a 2½-1½ home defeat: Steve Oakman won, Keith Hossack drew, but Gary Willson and Mason Woodhams went down to strong opposition.
In the Mid-Sussex League Division 2 our third team, promoted last season, consolidated their position in the top half of the table with a 3-2 home win over Horsham thirds. Jerry Anstead and Steve Blewitt won, Ollie Willson and Derek Cosens drew, Gary Willson lost.
