THE summer tournaments are coming to an end at the Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club, in time for autumn and the clocks going back.
The Winser Trophy K.O. was won by Mel Young (St Leonards) who beat Derek Cosens (Bexhill) in the Final; George Jelliss (St Leonards) won the Dent Cup, the plate event, beating Robert Smart of Bexhill.
The Whyte Cup rapid-play was won by Paul Kelly (St Leonards) with 12 points from 14 games, ahead of Steve Blewitt (St Leonards). The second division Rider Trophy was won by Alan Ticehurst (Eastbourne) with 11 from 14, just pipping Mason Woodhams of Hastings by half a point.
There was a bad start to the League season: in our first foray of 2012/13 the local club’s team in Kent League Division 6 (we also play in Division 2, as well as in the Mid-Sussex League) went down 3-1 at Snodland. Robert Smart added victory to his tasks as captain and chauffeur, but Con Power, Keith Hossack and Roy Richardson all lost in a disappointing performance.
