Group calls on town to help save iconic building

A LOCAL community group is urgently seeking local contributions to save the iconic Hastings Observer Building being auctioned off to the highest bidder next Friday, June 13, at the Brighton Metropole.

The White Rock Trust, which was responsible for winning the battle to save and rebuild Hastings Pier, is campaigning to buy the Observer building and work towards local ownership and a sensitive redevelopment plan, benefiting both residents and businesses.

Built in 1921, the iconic building was home to town’s newspaper, to the Hastings Observer, which dates back to 1859, but the paper moved out of the premises in 1989 and the building has since fallen into disrepair.

The redevelopment of the Observer building by the White Rock Trust is part of a wider neighbourhood plan to turn the building into a hub for community activities. The White Rock Trust hopes to transform the building into a “common house” for the neighbourhood.
