THE owner of a well-known town centre property has been fined £1,000 after allowing it to fall into disrepair.

Hastings Borough Council targeted the former Friday Ad building in Wellington Place - unleashing the authority’s Grotbuster team on its owner.

Jayantkumar Bhimjiyani of Broadfields Avenue, Edgware, Middlesex, was convicted in his absence of failing to comply with an enforcement notice to improve the condition of the listed building.

He was fined £1,000, the maximum possible, and he was also told to pay full of costs of more than £300, and a £15 surcharge.

Cllr Peter Chowney, head of planning at the authority, told the Observer: “We pride ourselves on the appearance of Hastings, and the robust approach we take to dilapidated buildings.

“We simply will not tolerate property owners who neglect their buildings.

“I am pleased that the court took a similar view, awarding the maximum fine of £1,000.

“Bhimjiyani faces the prospect of a further fine of £100 per day if the property is not improved, and, obviously, we will continue to press for improvements to be made.”
