A PROJECT to replace the benches on Winkle Island has been given a boost thanks to funding from The Veolia Environmental Trust.
The Trust has awarded the Hastings Old Town Residents Association (HOTRA) a grant of £5,000 to be help fund the replacement of the current benches with durable ones made from stainless steel and wood.
Chair of the residents association, Dick Edwards, said: “It is great that The Veolia Environmental Trust has awarded this grant and we look forward to working with them to develop and undertake a scheme that will result in the best for the island and Hastings.”
The trust will now work with HOTRA to decide on the final specifications and start date for the work.
East Sussex County Council and Hastings Borough Council have agreed to pay for all of the paving on Winkle Island to be upgraded. Work on this is also to start soon.
The Veolia Environmental Trust’s executive director, McNabb Laurie, said: “Congratulations to the residents association on their achievement.
“We have been awarding grants to community and environmental projects like this one for over 15 years.”
