Fire breaks out in flats

A fire broke out inside a block of flats in St Leonards last night (Tuesday).

Police were informed by firefighters from Bohemia Road Fire Station that the small fire may have been deliberately started inside the flats in Caves Road.

Emergency services attended the scene at around 11pm. The fire was on the stairwell and quickly put out.

Detective Sergeant Tony Webb, from East Sussex CID, said: “Although this was a samll fire and fortunately no one was injured but it could have ended with more serious consequences.

“If you have any information or saw or heard any suspicion activity and have not yet spoken to officers then please call 101 quoting serial 1894 of 9/10 or alternatively leave an anonymous message with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Officers will be continuing with local enquiries today and I would urge any residents who have concerns to please speak to them. A scene guard will also remain at the property to allow forensic examinations of the scene to continue.”
