A YOUNG father made his first appearance today (Friday) at Lewes Crown Court charged with murdering his five-week-old baby daughter.

Mark Sandland, 27 of The Tubman public House, Cambridge Road, appeared in the dock of court one wearing a green t-shirt and sporting a heavily tattooed right arm.

He had been remanded overnight from Brighton Magistrates Court after being arrested by detectives in Hastings on Wednesday.

Sandland is charged with murdering Aimee-Rose Sandland at an address in St Leonards on November 9, 2012, following an incident on November 5. The infant died at Kings College Hospital, London, on November 9.

A plea and case management hearing has been set for January 10.

An application for bail is likely to be made within the two weeks.

Sandland showed no emotion as headed down to the cells walking past family and friends in floods of tears in the public gallery.
