CHILDREN from deprived backgrounds in Hastings will be getting extra money from the Government towards free school meals.
The town’s MP, Amber Rudd, welcomed the announcement this week that the Pupil Premium scheme will have its funding doubled in the school year from next September.
Sarah Teather, Minister of State for Children and Families, said the scheme, which is extra money given to schools for each pupil eligible for free school meals, will double from £625 million to £1.25 billion next year.
Ms Rudd said: “This is fantastic news and will release targeted funds to schools in areas with the greatest need. This will benefit schools in Hastings in particular, where the number of pupils eligible for free school meals is nearly 10 per cent higher than the national average.”
