A SCHOOLGIRL has landed a role in a new production of a well-known musical.
Emily Carey, 10, of Newgate Road, St Leonards is currently spending her summer playing the role of Marta Von Trapp, the second youngest of the Von Trapp children, in a new production of The Sound of Music at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London.
She is in one of three teams of children who star alongside Charlotte Wakefield (Maria) and Michael Xavier (Captain Von Trapp).
Her team performed on the opening night to critical acclaim including five-star reviews and coverage across the national press, including the front page of the Daily Telegraph.
Emily, who attends Claremont Preparatory School in St Leonards, currently studies at The Mad Fish Performing Arts Studio in Bexhill where she was awarded a scholarship to attend from the director, Emma Burnett.
Emma went to see Emily on press night and said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to see Emily on such a special occasion, Emily has always had something very special about her performances and is surely set to achieve even greater things as she gets older. She is a natural on stage and has a very unique and mature ability to engage the audience without losing her childhood charm and appeal.”
Emily said: “Performing in The Sound of Music at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is the most amazing experience. Everyone is really nice and it’s fun to be able to perform with other children who enjoy it as much as I do. I would do this forever if I could.”
The schoolgirl made her West End debut in July last year in the smash hit production of Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and performed there for seven months before landing her latest role in The Sound of Music.
The production runs until September 7. Visit www.openairtheatre.com.
