Hastings schoolgirl Elesha Calvert won an iPad and £250 for her school to spend on environmental projects after her design for an eco house of the future scooped top prize in a regional competition.

Children aged seven to 16, from across East Sussex and Kent, were invited to enter the competition to celebrate the opening of the new Green Square renewable energy showroom covering the south-east.

The competition had a huge response, with a large number of entries, but the model built by Elesha, nine, who attends All Saints CE Academy in Githa Road, was chosen by the judges for its innovative design, creativity and intricate thought process.

Paul Smith, centre manager of the new showroom, based in Tunbridge Wells, said: “The launch exceeded our expectations and I am delighted for Elesha that the hard work that went into her wonderful model was rewarded - and that she has won £250 for her school to spend on an environmental project.

“We also had a presentation from the Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys on renewable energy was very thought provoking, demonstrating the important views of the future generation.”

Green Square installs central heating systems for homes and businesses based on renewable energy technologies, such as pellet stoves, biomass boilers, heat pumps, thermal stores and solar thermal and solar PV.

Paul said: “We are very excited to finally be here in the south-east. We have received an excellent response from people so far, many who are keen to switch to green energy supplies.

“Our doors are now open to anyone in the region wanting to learn more about renewables and I look forward to talking to homeowners and businesses across East Sussex and Kent about this.”
