East Sussex Arts Club

HOW many times have we heard people say “It all started when...”?

Alan Colledge shared his story with us at this month’s meeting. As a child out in London with his mother, they missed a train home. His mother decided to take him to see the pictures at the National Gallery. So started a passion for painting and also teaching art.

Alan demonstrated techniques for representing ‘snow’ in watercolour and suggested that the use of any pigment was acceptable but that we should be more diligent in the basics of mixing, making it easier to reproduce the tones we like to use with more consistency of colour. This is something we know but seldom practice.

This reminder and the beautiful picture he produced were much appreciated by the members.

The Picture of the Month competition was won by Helen Evans for her picture depicting Stormy Weather. The Artist of the Month was Jenny Thompson who was praised for the variety in her beautiful work.

The next meeting is on March 8 at St Johns Church Hall, Brittany Road, St Leonards, starting at 10.30am.
